Portrait of a portrait photographer, by Rita Buyle.

Post by ritaB »

Leen Koper has been a professional photographer in the Netherlands for almost 40 years, but seriously considers early retirement now.
Having been a chartered accountant for several years in the busy Amsterdam region, he moved to the more rural area of Zeeland with Zierikzee as his hometown. Not being able to find an employer with a job he really liked in accountancy, he accepted a job with the local photographer/cameradealer, where he had bought a camera a year before when his son was born.

After 18 years of working as an employee he decided it was time to start his own studio and bought an (very small) old 17th century building to start his portrait and wedding studio. Years of hard working as he works in a pretty small town with fierce competition brought him to where he is now: a well respected high street photographer. He joined the British Institute of Photography, became an Associate to the Institute and a Qualified European Photographer, one of the first in the Netherlands.

During his career he won quite some prizes, both in the Netherlands and abroad, for his portrait and wedding photography, but, as he smilingly stated: "You are as good as your clients think you are."
