Bryan Peterson on D800 and D4...

Post by DiederikVP »

Underneath what I found through this website (http://www.photographybay.com/2011/07/11/nikon-d4-and-d800-rumors-continue/)...
... posted by Bryan Peterson on facebook about upcoming Nikon releases:
Something must be cooking with all of the “new Nikon” rumors slating cameras for late-Summer. The most recent rumor comes from Nikon shooter Bryan Peterson, who is know by many for his great Understanding Exposure books.
Did some research, found the article and made a screenshot:

He talks about a "French friend". That could be a connection within Chasseur d'Images redaction. Bryan Petersons books are translated in French, quite popular in France and often mentioned in CI articles...

Post by Stany Buyle »

If his source would be Chasseur d'Images, it would be a very safe bet indeed. I'm quite sure they have been or are testing right now what might be released in a couple of weeks. TMHO Chasseur d'Images has as much inside information than Dpreview or Luminouslanscape has...

I do not believe Nikon will continue to put the same sensor in a D700 successor and a D3(s) successor like they did with D3 and D700. A D700 successor with a sensor made for all purpose and a D4 with extreme high iso possibilities -and probably even more-, not to split up the same customer potential and to justify the much higher D4 price, seems the most intelligent commercial decision for me. Taking in consideration that it would be 2 cameras aiming at a different public, a simultaneous release would be normal.
Add to that a D400 for yet another public and this could end up as a very exciting August or September month...

Wow... Exciting! :D
Have to talk with my wife... ;)
kindest regards,

Stany

Hi Stany,
are you lusting after a 20 Mpix D800?
It´s going to be an exciting camera. But let´s see how good high ISO performance will be.

Hi Pam,
Yes I am..., even very much actually. While I am quite confident that it will come soon, I sold my D700 some weeks ago already and I actually use my D7000. If nothing would be real or at least announced for coming Sept, I will be "forced" to buy a D3s for lowlight photography.
kindest regards,

Stany

Ah, a D3s ... this is the camera I want so much. So who knows if I will buy it from you some time in the future?
I might even drop by in France.

Bryan Peterson on D800 and D4...-summary

Post by Stany Buyle »

After my wife decided to delete the screenshot posted by D., for those who can't or who don't want to open the link because you don't have a facebook account I will summarize what Mr. Bryan Peterson posted on his facebook account:
Apparently through a very reliable source in France he knows that "New Nikon's are Coming-Finally"(title).
A full frame D800 with 20Mp at a retail price of $ 2495
A D4 with 19-20Mp at a retail price of $ 5,000.00
Announcement by late September 2011.

Or better, read it yourself: http://www.facebook.com/notes/bryan-peterson/new-nikons-are-coming-finally/10150244122039133

Well, Nikon sure would make a lot of people very happy with a D800 of that price and specs.
It would give us Nikonians a 5DII killer finally ;)

Who knows, I might buy one and sell my Sony A900 kit.

A today's Nikonrumours' message confirms what Bryan Peterson wrote... Yes!!! :D
From the nikonrumours article:
Here is what the Nikon rep said: “Two new FX bodies will be announced by the end of August. Availability in Fall.”
Read more here: http://nikonrumors.com/2011/07/19/nikon-rep-two-dslrs-will-be-announced-by-the-end-of-august.aspx/#more-21082

This time I believe the rumour.

My reasoning for simultaneaous D4 and D800 release

Post by Stany Buyle »

Going with different sensors for a less expensive and a more expensive new FX body sounds more logic than putting the same sensor in both.

If Nikon does not release D4 and D800 simultaneously, there won't be the same number of people who buy D4 like it was with D3 -even not a fraction of that number-, because they simply will wait for D800. Back in 2007 several people like myself initially bought a D3 because we did not expect the same sensor in a 50% less expensive body 8 months later...

And last but not least I do not like those big bulky and heavy camera bodies without PUFlash, and I'm not the only one. And nothing to do with price, and Nikon is for sure aware about that.
kindest regards,

Stany

Well, if your reasoning is true, then Nikon will release the D4 and D400.
Buying different FX-sensors may not make sense economically.
Well, we will all find out soon.

Now he swept to the Bryan Peterson prediction route, and I am convinced he's finally right.

Well, it´s not so easy to predict new announcements, as there are usually quite a few prototypes floating around and not everything which is leaked will finally hit the market. Fukushima certainly made things more difficult.

Now also NR joins Bryan Peterson's prediction...

Post by Stany Buyle »

Today also nikonroumours joins the group who give credibility to the prediction of Bryan Peterson approx a month ago.
http://nikonrumors.com/2011/08/02/august-24th-nikon-d700-and-d3s-successors.aspx/
Acoording to what they write D800 would have 24Mpix and D4 would have 18Mp. D800 available in October :D , D4 beginning 2012...

So, Stany, do you expect the D800 to be a D3x in a smaller body?

I don't think it will be the D3x sensor but a new sensor. I don't care too much about 18 or 24Mp but more about DR and overall IQ. A sensor like D7000 while keeping up exceptional DR until iso 800-1600 or a 18-24Mp Fuji sensor with useable iso 12800 would be nice... ;)
Still 18 days to go... Can't sleep anymore... :D :D :D

That was my thinking too when I read that it was rumored to be 24mp, would be nice if so and the price was at Sony a900 or Canon 5d levels

Stany, I´m worried about your health, you know you´ll need your sleep - and don´t forget to eat ;)

Exciting times to find out how Nikon will set up their FX line in the future. I wonder if sonyalpharumors.com is right when he says that the new Sony FX sensor won´t be available by early 2012. It is just his estimation, though. We will find out if Nikon was able to source a new sensor of that Mpix size. Video seems to be a must these days, so it would be a risk putting a camera on the market without that feature. The sensor in the D3X and A900 seems to be unfit for taking videos.

As I said, I am most interested in the D4 as this is where I expect a new sensor with more progress in the dynamic range and high ISO field. Usually Nikon sources its sensors for their flagship and then later on uses it in lesser bodies to even out investment cost. That´s why I believe the D800 to get the D3x sensor.

It would also make sense as the D4 would then be newer technology and sales would not be cannibalised by the D800. Exciting times ...

Blame it on Fukushima, I guess. It was estimated that Japanese firms would need half a year to sort things out and that would be sometime in Fall.

Bryan Peterson wrote "late September", not August 24th...

Post by Stany Buyle »

With all speculation about new Nikon FX's coming, and more specific about the upcoming anouncement on August 24th, I remind that Bryan Peterson wrote that two new Nikon FX cameras will be announced late September 2011 and nothing about August 24th...
Bryan Peterson wrote literally:
Two new Nikon's-The D800, at 20MP, full frame, retail price of $2495.00 and Nikon DX-4, full frame at 19-20MP with a retail price of $5,000.00 and both will be announced by late September 2011!
Taking into account a message from a very reliable source who posted earlier in this topic on August 10th that "no DSLR's will be announced on August 24th", and even though I hope he's wrong, I don't expect anything exiting(*) in 72 hours...
(*)= After having done a (disappointing) test ride of about 2 weeks with GH1 back in 2010, a mirror-less doesn't attract me too much. Of course it's possible that the Nikon mirror-less blows away the Panasonics...

We'll see...
