Is 28mm f/2.8 AIS wide enough? If so it's considered as a great lens...
As you talk about manual focusing lens, and if you need (much)wider than 24-28mm, did you consider Samyang 14mm (21mm on D7000)? It's very reasonably priced and considered as a good quality optic...

How would the 20mm AIS Nikkor be on a D7000? Is Samyang Korean?

As I believe you're a US citizen, perhaps you could check for info on AIS lens compatibility on D7000 here: http://www.keh.com/

It all depends on how wide you want to go.
I an using the Tamron 2,8/17-50 ( without built in motor)and it fits how wide I want to go. It is cheap, it is good enough and, more important, it is light weight!

There are excellent zooms on the market: the Tamron 17-50 is indeed wonderful, the Tokina 11-16 2.8 also surpasses many primes, but if you really want to go the AIS way, I would recommend a lens I am using now and then on FX (real wide angle on FX, only slightly wide on DX): the Tokina 17mm 3.5.
See my mini-review here:

If you accept slightly longer focal lengths, 24f2, 28f2 and 28f2.8 are all very good choices.

Guy, I once owned that Tokina SL17. Indeed, a wonderful lens and worth every penny it did cost. And that weren't much at the time!
