Introduction and setup info:

The pictures with D4 have been made on Feb 9th during the D4 and D800 presentation at Art & Craft in Ghent. (http://www.artencraft.be)
The pictures with D7000 have been made on Feb 15th at Art & Craft as well.
:!: The D4 camera I had was not a finished product. It was marked as "sample" and the Nikon rep said it did not have its final firmware yet.

Camera setup:
The pictures have been made on tripod using self timer, with the same 105 AF-S VR -VR set to "off".
Image
A(perture) mode and F7.1. ((M)anual mode would have been better, but it was quite hectic and stressing during the D4 demo...)
All picture have been shot in RAW and jpeg but as I prefer to use RAW for cropping and IQ I had to wait until yesterday for Nikon Capture NX2.3.1 and ViewNX2.3.0 which can handle D4 NEF files.
In camera settings were Standard picture style with default sharpening set to "3", contrast, saturation, hue and brightness to "0".

Resizing, post processing and cropping: For NEF conversion I work exclusively with Nikon Capture NX2. I prefer Nikon Capture NX over PS because it keeps and shows the camera settings like neutral, standard, vivid or portrait also in RAW processing which is often a huge time saver over working with Adobe PS.

WB was set to AWB.
Metering was set to center weighted area.

File size:
While D7000 and D4 both have 16Mp, I did not have to resize for the 1024 x image.

Some clarification about file naming:
The D7000 files have been called f.i. D7iso000100 for classification reasons.
Iso indication in the files like "iso 12800+2.0" has been called D4iso051200 for classification reasons.
:!: Because of the stress and hectic during the D4/D800 demo I did not align the focal plane perfectly for height to the test target but I copied the camera position as close as possible while doing the D7000 shots.

My "real life"-test chart looks like this:

The above is a crop of the complete scene which looks like this:

:!: Because of some disturbing reflections on the glass of my watch in some of the pictures I did not always include 100% crops of my watch to compare.

Re: D3s vs D4, samples at diff isos and 100% crops

Post by Stany Buyle »

Update 20/02/2012: Due to a mistake in the test with pictures taken at shutter speeds faster than 1/60 sec in that particular light conditions and due to the fact that the D4 we used for our test was not a finalised product the test will be completely redone with a final camera and under appropriate light conditions.
kindest regards,

Stany

D3s crops look better than D4. Interesting... Considering the purchase of a second hand D3s...
