Well I took delivery on my D700 Wednesday. I decided to try to check out how I'd like to work with a larger sensor & while the price was down due to the rebate I decided to buy one. It will probably mean I'll sell my D200, but I'm rather unhappy with it for what I've been using it for of late. The focus points are just not where I want them any more.
Now, in regards to the D700 there are many things I like about it. Like the fact that I love the the knob on the back - such a huge improvement to the D300 knob. But I'm still not sure about the metering on it. It seems to be blowing highlights all the time. Granted they're within reason of me being able to fix them in NX2. But I don't seem to have that problem with the D300. Anyhow, I need to test more so I can be sure.
Any suggestions on the metering issue & your experiences will be appreciated...
Going out to test the D700 metering yet again....
Lil :-)

Re: Took delivery on my D700 Wednesday
Congrats with the new toy ! and welcome to the FX club !
about metering, with the D3, I don't really have a problem, exposure is almost always spot on. I am using active D-lighting and this is helping a lot for contrasty pictures, even if you get some noise in the shadow areas, it gives me usable jpegs and saves a lot of time in PP for normal pictures. Could you show an example of the problem you have ?

I have -0.3 EV dialled into my D3 when I take pictures outside in daylight.
Indoors I don´t need that as flash photography tends to underexpose slightly.

Re: Took delivery on my D700 Wednesday
Thanks for input. Someone told me to change the b3 setting to help the red channel & that helped a lot - I've changed the WB under b to b3 which controls the red channel more. And I've programmed the D700 to on automatic do a EV -2/6 automatically. I still do even more EV comp. But I'm getting there. Yes - some may well be contrast issues - - but - - against a flat wall checking Sunny f/16 the camera still blew the red channel.
Still - Sunday I went out & shot some wildlife & I brought it along with the D300 to make sure I worked with it the way I shoot more & I got some very nice shots. It did well with the Sigmonster. Here are a few...
Oh these were shot in M mode - so I set all the settings myself & they're 50% crops. ISO I believe to be 1250 - but I did shoot it up to ISO 2500

What a sweet series! You sure had better weather out there. We have mist and grey clouds most of the time.
And the sigmonster really did well.
As for the red channel issues. Have you tried UniWB already?

Hi Pam,
glad you enjoyed. We have rain heading our way for a few days, but then the sun is supposed to come back.
I've gotten the recommendation to change the WB b setting to b3 & that really helped a lot. Once out with the Sigmonster I had very few problems - it just comes down to shooting the way I'm used to. There are definitely things I really like about this camera.
Thanks
Lil :-)
