12 flowers with Nikon D1h... and 105 AF-S VR + 2xTCeIII

 related topic on this forum: 12 flowers with Nikon D1h.

 related topic on this forum: Anybody collecting DSLR's ?

These images were initially meant as a test if my D1H autofocuses with 105 AF-S VR + 2x TCIIIe , and yes it does AF with this lens/TC combo... :o

All images are taken with D1h and 105 AF-S VR + 2xTCeIII, handhold.

A D1h is still capable of producing very acceptable results, although it is dated. The main reason for upgrading is not, as most people seem to think, the number of megapixels, but the contrasts it can master. (Although some are convinced it is number of the frames per seconds as most people seem to be sports photographers that produce images for magazines like Sports Illustrated) The dynamic range of a camera has been the main breakpoint for serious photographers; that is why cameras like the Fuji S3 and S5 have been sought after for so many years after they disappeared from the market: their digital range has been better than anything else on the market in those days.
The race for more and more megapixels has mainly been a marketing tool. About 98% of people never need anything larger than a 6 megapixel camera, but just buy it because someone else has one.
Just a few people need the D800, for just prints on the web, like most people do, everything else is like killing a mosquito with a gun. (Although it can be fun, shooting mosquitos this way) :D

Hi Stany,
Nice pictures with a nostalgic camera. Did you use AF ?
Best regards, Carlos

Hi Carlos,
Thanks for your reaction.
Yes, and AF works very well with the 105 AF-S with 2x TCIIIe combo. D1h with this lens/TC combo needs good light though. In low light it's hunting before locking AF.
Remarkable is also that the IQ loss with this lens/TC combo is nearly zero because of the big pixels. If you would compare the photons with a dart and the individual pixels with the dartboard' bulls eye it's easy for a photon to arrive on the right spot, despite some diffraction caused by the many lens elements of this lens/TC combo.

A rose with Nikon D1 at iso 1600

An image taken with my Nikon D1 and 105 AF-S vr + 2xTCIIIe at iso 1600 in RAW.
It was both a test if my D1 autofocuses with 105 AF-S VR + 2x TCIIIe (as I tested with my D1H) and to remind myself how an iso 1600 image with a 14 year old camera looks like.
I must admit that I did not expect D1 IQ at iso 1600 to be so nice... :o

Converted to jpeg in Nikon CaptureNX2 while taking profit of "Noise reduction-better quality 2012"
Added my signature in PS

You can find the ful size jpeg of this image here.

One more with D1...

D1 with 85mm AF-S F1.8 at F1.8 and at iso 200

You can find the full size jpeg from this image here.

In this image you can see a weakness of the early DSLR's: lack of dynamic range.

I am sad, because I just realised that I should never have upgraded cameras. My 14 years old D1 does just as good as my D800e... ;)

Image taken today with D1 and 105AF-S vr+ 2xTCIIIe, handhold.

Of course, my dog... ;)

Taken with D2H and 35 F1.8 AF-S at F1.8 and iso 1600 as a NEF file, post processed in Capture NX2 for picture control setting as Standard (which makes a HUGE difference in the final quality of the image compared to the original Capture NX processing) and some noise reduction.

... that people change cameras too soon...
Very nice images, and while watched on my monitor, indistinguishable from photos taken with new cameras.
