Nikon D750 vs D810

Image

On September 12th 2014 Nikon released their D750, a Full frame dslr which is sitting somewhere between D610 and the professional D810. TMHO D750 is more a mini D810 than a refined D610 while it has the D810 (and D4s :!: ) AF system, -even an improved version- and a rather professional build quality, close to D810 but, -unfortunately- with a lesser button layout.
D750 is a fast camera with a burst rate of 6,5 fps which is unfortunately not backed up with an equivalent buffer(approx. 20 images while shooting NEF 14bit).
Interesting for macro and astro shooters is the D750 high quality tilting LCD.

I used D750 first time at PhotoKina and rented once more one to test it's IQ in normal light. You can find the results in this topic.
Impressed (read "amazed" :o ) by those test results I bought one at Art & Craft in Ghent(B) as a backup for my D810 ànd as a complementary camera for very low light situations.

Handling for the first time a D750 "in the field" I felt rather uncomfortable with the button layout compared to my D810. Dedicating center and spot metering to respectively the Pv and Fn buttons I find it difficult to push those buttons while pushing the trigger.
Next to that D750 inherits the loud shutter and mirror slap that I hated so much in my D700, a very big difference with the D810 near to "sound of silence", especially in its quiet modes. D750 quiet mode is a joke while you barely hear a difference with shooting in normal mode.
No AF-ON button is not a problem for me, but it might be for someone else... that's about all the negative I can tell about Nikon newest full frame body.

While a camera is made to take pictures, IQ is my main concern and after having been amazed by these test shots I felt tempted to compare with my D810 in a REAL low light situation.
Here underneath you find the scene I created for this test, of course with billiard products as subject ... ;)
I added a bank note while it has lots of detail to compare.

D810 has a 36Mp sensor and D750 has a 24Mp sensor so I converted and resized the D810 files to 6016x4016px, -which is the size of D750 files- in order to compare the images side by side.
Down sampling D810 resolution to D750 resolution to compare is in a way unfair against D810 while in real life use the native higher resolution needs less magnification to show the same image on screen or in print. Needing less magnification means also that artefacts and noise is less visible. In a way the same situation what you get between FX and DX where the initial image on the sensor of FX needs less magnification than the initial image from the DX sensor...

All underneath pictures have been captured in nef with both cameras and converted with Nikon View NX 2.10.
No post processing of any kind has been done on the images, with exception of cropping.

Camera settings were identic:

Viewed at 100% in Capture NX2 while comparing D750 and D810 at iso HI-2 you get this:
    Image
As you can see, D750 beats D810 about noise with a very big margin at high iso.
D810 is significantly better at low iso, -mainly because of resolution advantage, iso 64 and (probably) DR-, but D750 is surpassing clearly D810 from iso3200 upwards. TMHO crossover point is somewhere 1600 >< iso2500
From iso 6400 on D750 wipes the floor with his big brother in relation to noise and IQ. Kudos to Nikon. D750 is a real high iso champion!
  • D750 vs D810: AF
Even though D810 AF system is outstanding, D750' AF seems to lock even faster. Former statement based on real life shooting while using my 80-400 AF-S on both.
  • D750 vs D810: viewfinder
The D810 round viewfinder is more comfortable than the D750 square viewfinder.
  • D750 vs D810: shutter and mirror sound
Here D810 beats D750 with a big margin. Whereas D810 has a very silent shutter and mirror slap sound, D750 has a "clack" that remind me to the very disturbing noise I hated so much with my D700.
In my case while often taking pictures in billiards tournaments where silence is required, this is important.
  • D750 vs D810: body ergonomics and grip
As mentioned in the introduction I prefer D810 camera body by far over the D750 body. With my D750 I keep struggling to reach/find the Fn and Pv button while pushing the trigger with my index finger. Also the grip is less comfortable to me.
TMHO button layout on D810 is much better, at least for my hands...
Will be completed with more samples in the next days.

Stany

There are two things at least that "downsample it" advocates overlook. Larger pixels have better noise performance at very low light levels, and they (with proper design) are less affected with flare, resulting cleaner and more neutral blacks.

Thanks for the review Stany.

I understand wedding photographers love these high ISOs that the new cameras are offering, but I'm more interested in the lower ISO 64 sensitivity of the D810. That, and the shutter noise, is enough for me to see the 810 as a better option.

Good morning Iliah,
Thanks for your reaction. I agree with cleaner black.
About larger pixels related to flare I don't understand :? as I thought flare was exclusively related to lens design.

Stany

It was a pleasure.
How far are you with D750 nefs in Capture NX2?

To me shutter and mirror slap noise and button layout make me prefer D810 over D750, by far. D750 high iso is very tempting though...

Nikon please, give us a D750 sensor in a D810 body!

While D810 is the actual DSLR king at low iso and great until iso 3200, D750 sets new standards from iso 3200 upwards, and while using two similar and complementary bodies next to eachis is more handsome than two different ones...

... Nikon please, give us a D750 sensor in a D810 body!
