Hi Stany,
Wanted to go take some pictures with your 16-35 on my D3s this afternoon in a ruinous house that has the reputation being a haunted house...
In a hurry to leave I took my D3x instead of my D3s though so I was forced to work at (much) lower iso than I would be able with my D3s, forcing me into real low shutter speeds...
The VR does its job very well, some of the underneath pictures are with a shutter speed of 1/10sec or slower, very special... Also @ 1/5th sec you can get decently sharp pictures from static subjects if your handholding technique is good enough...
The AF is silent and very fast, even in very low light conditions...
Distortion is on the same level or perhaps a bit better than my 17-35 F2.8 used to be, but corners are much sharper...
Some of the underneath pictures are impossible with 14-24 while shooting handhold @ such slow shutter speeds...
In some of the pictures you'll see some perspective distortion but I didn't have the time to correct that...
And BTW, didn't encounter any ghosts...
Some of the pictures:
16-35 on D3x. 1/25sec, F13, 19mm
16-35 on D3x. 1/40sec, F7.1, 28mm
16-35 on D3x. 1/30sec, F7.1, 20mm
16-35 on D3x. 1/5sec, F4, 16mm
16-35 on D3x. 1/6sec, F4, 16mm
16-35 on D3x. 1/20sec, F4, 16mm
16-35 on D3x. 1/60sec, F4, 16mm
16-35 on D3x. 1/5sec, F4, 35mm
16-35 on D3x. 1/13sec, F4, 20mm
16-35 on D3x. 1/50sec, F10, 35mm
Greetings,
Rudy

Rudy, thanks much for these samples. If you have a moment it would be most helpful to see an image shot at 16mm/f4 where the entire area is in the focus plane, and has detail. Such as a brick wall, or a wall with wallpaper, etc. Thanks!

Underneath a quick test with the 16-35 @16mm and F4 on my D3x, captured in jpeg, on tripod. I will do some more test shots when I find the time.

So.. Would you ditch 14-24 for 16-35. or if you have 14-24, 50, 70-200 wait for new 24-120 f4 they say might coming. If you had 16-35 and 24-120 (24-70) would you not change lenses alot in general use
Cheers all

Rudy, thanks much for posting the brick wall images, looks encouraging.
From what I'm seeing, my point of view on choosing between the 14-24 and 16-35: For tripod work the 14-24 wins, for hand-held the 16-35. At least for me, everyone's reasons and needs will be different. A big question for me is if/how the f/4 will be limiting in dark interiors. With the lowlight capabilities of the D3s and the VRII, perhaps not much at all, other than making it harder to capture people in motion in low light. For events it could be fine, for sports it cold be a problem.
