What will be the numbers on Nikon cameras? It is rather confusing nowadays.
One digit: professional full frame cameras, like D3
Two digits; amateur APS frame cameras, D90
Three digits: professional cameras, D700, full frame AND..... APS sized cameras, D300
Four digits: amateur APS cameras, D5000 and semi professional APS cameras, D7000
Does that make any sense? Not in my opinion.
This should be well known by Nikon engineers beforehand, because it takes a lot of time before a camera will come to the market.
Or am I the only one who doesnot understand?

Re: Numbers Nikon cameras
Hi Leen,
I think there is quite a bit of dicussion about the use of names among camera makers which makes it more difficult to create new names...
Canon's 60D against Nikon's D60 etc...
Changing only one digit f.i. from D90 to D91, could give an impression of "just a slight upgrade"...
A big naming confusion came after Nikon integrated FX format I think...
Just my thoughts...
BTW, when do you go to PhotoKina?

Yes, the names are rather confusing.
I don't know yet when I'll be at Photokina, I even don't know whether I go.

Re: Numbers Nikon cameras
I don't understand the namings of Nikon eighter. It allready started when the D70 came after the D100.
Maybe it's a good idea to give the upperclass real names instead of a number like: "D-sire or D-lighted" or names as such.
Numbers are OK for me when there is something logical about them. They should have thought about that when the D30 and the S1 came...
Regards Edwin
