What is your favorite pocket camera ?

Post by Guy Van Hooveld »

There are a few very interesting compact cameras on the market, coming close to DSLR performance of a few years ago...

Anybody any concrete experience with cameras like the G10, P6000 or Panasonic LX3 (or any other interesting one) ?

Which one would you select as a nice travel companion next to your heavy gear ?

Finepix F 50 fd or my "old Fuji F10"...

Post by Stany Buyle »

... both very small, great overall IQ, very good IQ until iso 800.
Movie mode on the F50fd is more than pleasing...
Battery of the F10 was a disaster...
Battery of the F50fd is much better...
Both cameras are great for unsuspicious street photography...
kindest regards,

Stany

I hope to receive my Sigma DP1 tomorrow. Ever since I heard about that camera it has interested me.
Its sensor is almost APS-C size, so far the only compact camera on the market, as far as I know.

It is not for sale any more, but my walkaround camera is the Panasonic LX 2, a camera with a Leica lens of 28-105 and the opportunity to shoot RAW. I made some prints from it that were 60cm wide and they look great. One warning, use it only at ISO 100, because above ISO 100 it becomes pretty "grainy".
Last summer we had a friendly meeting with nine professional photographers and five of us owned a LX 2 camera and had it with us. One colleague once owned a LX1, but it had been stolen. A true photographers camera!
The LX 3 seems to be even better, but the lens is shorter.

I have been able in the meantime to play with a friend's Leica version of the Panasonic LX3, and I have been very impressed by the low light capabilities.
The lens is an f2.0 lens, maybe a bit too short, but you can push ISO a bit and still have excellent pictures. This is not really comparable with what you'll get from a DSLR but VERY decent.... the only small issues are weight (with respect to the size) and handling (didn't fit very well in my hand). Other than that I think that the Panasonic/Leica is the best one at the moment, the Canon is the most versatile (G10) and the P6000 not so good (based on all the reviews I have seen), a pity for Nikon. I would really have a kind of D40x+18-200VR combo (from a quality perspective) in my pocket :D

You should have pretty deep pockets to hold tha combo, just like a bank manager. ;-)
I know, the Panasonic holds terribly, the weight is pretty high for such a small camera, but the images are wonderful for such a small sized camera. The negative side is pretty easy to overcome. I've walked thousands of kilometers carrying it (actually, a little over thousand miles). It has never let me down.

My favorite pocket camera is a Olympus E-420 with a 25mm f/2.8 pancake lens. I even took it in a pocket of my jacket when skiing, this winter. It is far from a perfect camera, but it can produce a nice bokeh and has a very versatile (50mm 24x36 equivalent) standard lens. Here are some shots:
