Interesting thread about skintone rendering on Dpreview...

Post by Stany Buyle »

Initial thread was about somebody returning his 5DMkII because of the apperant inability to render correct the caucasian skintones. Next to numerous uninteresting reactions Hans van Eijsden came with very plausible comments and solutions.
Apperantly both use ACR software, I wonder if the problem would have been there if they would use the original Canon software for convertion just like -TMHO- ACR isn't the appropriate software to use with RAF and NEF files...

I posted this reaction myself in that Dpreview thread:
Very interesting thread and reactions. Thanks for that. I wonder if the differences between RAW convertion with brand software and ACR are the same as with Nikon and Fuji? Many people agree that about colours the original Nikon software (CaptureNX2) and FujiHU do a much better job for RAW convertion than ACR... What are the results if you would first convert with DPP and than continue in PS or LR? Thanks in advance for your reaction. Kindest regards,Stany

I have only used LR since switching from 3rd shooter/intern. And I find that it does a wonderful job with RAW files (from my old Pentax K10, to my D3/D300 I use now). I think you just have to take a moment to setup the camera calibration to your liking and then you're off. I actually did not like the NX rendition of the NEF files. I thought they were too punchy. And since I shoot 1500+ at some 15 hour weddings (300+ guests) I can't deal with an inferior DAM. These really is no option for me. But even still I have never said this skin just does not look right. Its a freaking RAW file, make it look right.

The only thing I don't like about LR2 is the fact that when it's opening the RAW file it shows the perfectly exposed jpg that's embedded in it for preview purposes and then it cranks up the exposure (brightness and contrast) and then it looks nothing like what I want it to. I have since removed LR2's 50% brightness and 25% contrast tweak that is automatic with every import and this has helped me out significantly no matter which camera profile I select. I now import with D2X Mode I as the default as well and have been getting excellent results. We must remember that any software other than Nikon specific software, can't read the picture controls, which render them useless.
