B/W portrait of today

Post by pam.meier »

Liked it in black and white. If you´re interested I´ll post the colored variant.

Nice tonality and lighting.
Question: is the left arm cut off in the orig pic or as a result from cropping?
If you´re interested I´ll post the colored variant.
Yes, and the B&W a little bigger size if possible. (1000px x 1000px is pôssible on our board)
kindest regards,

Stany

Oh, that´s a new feature! Great to hear that 1000 pix is possible.

The left arm is there on the original ;)

Hi Pam. Perhaps it's just me, but I tend to like portraiture better in B&W than in colour...
kindest regards,

Stany

You established a real good contact between yourself and the model; many photographers fail at this point.

However, there are some flaws in my opinion. Nest to the arms, your lights are a litlle to low, just look at the reflections in the eyes. The body is too square frontal, it would have been better to pose het at about 45 degrees from the camera axis; she would look a lot slimmer. Moreover, your camera is a little too low; try to get a little above the height of the eyes.

But, it has a good expression and that is the main thing that counts!

Thank you, Leen, for your tips, they are very much appreciated.
Experience means a lot in photography, I learned.
One of the things that I also found out is that changing the lighting can be a hassle when things get dynamic.
Hm, an assistant would be nice ;)

Changing the position of the lights when things get dynamic is almost impossible.
Either you use flat lighting, so light it even that whatever the position of the model it will give acceptable results or use a simple lighting of a fill and a mainlight and shoot as much as you can. Forget the kickerlights. The downside is that you will have to wade through a lot of images to pick the right one where everything in the image comes together. And still you have to hope it will be there........

Probably the best thing is to guide your spontanious moments as much as possible and talk it through before you start the shooting with the model, try to explain what you want and why you set up your lights that way. The model will surely understand and act accordingly.
