Question about lens resolving power...

I would like to know if there is a way to measure the lens resolving power without the future high density sensors/cameras being available.
If my calculation/reasoning is right, using a lens or lens-TC combo on a 12Mp DX sensor body without any signs of CA or other signs of optical failures means that this lens or lens-TC combo will serve well @ least for a 27,72 Mp FX sensor... Calculation based on the diagram from Dpreview here:

I'm sure the 70-200 VRII is among those in my bag that will serve me for a very long time, even while using as a combo with the incredible TC20 E III,
...but I would like to know a way to test other lenses' resolving power...
Unfortunately I don't have a 40-50Mp FX sensor camera body to my disposal for trying out...
I'm particularly interested in the resolving power of macro lenses, but also for general purpose lenses...

Thanks in advance for your reactions.

I got a reaction from Jim Pearce on the same question I posted in a thread on Dpreview with a link to a very interesting article about this topic on luminous-landscape.com:
