Any reason to prefer clean install over Vista64>Win7-64 upgr

Is there any reason to prefer clean install over Vista64>Win7-64 upgrade?
Reason I ask this is that I think while doing the upgrade I don't have to re-install programs and I keep my preferences, history and passwords in my user's profile...
In case I would do a clean install, and if I would copy my users profile completely, will my Vista64bit users profile be compatible to paste over my users profile in Win7 64 ?
I also think that after the upgrade all old Vista files will automatically been removed and after first defragmentation the new OS will be just placed on the HD like a clean install...
While I might be wrong, I would like your opinion...
