An iso-less digital camera...

Post by Stany Buyle »

I'm fascinated by the idea of "an iso less camera" as it has been described in many topics on Dpreview(here, here and here.). People like Iliah Borg and Bob Newman often write highly intersting thoughts about this evolution.
From what I understand and in relation to the D7000 as being a first appearance of an-iso less camera, a sensor like the one in the D7000 permits a technique(*) to underexpose, 1-2-3 stops while using iso 100, this way gaining in shutter speed and after that recover the underexposed images in post processing and end up with an image equal to an image that woudl have been taken at respectively iso 200, iso 400 or iso 800...
(*)It has to be said that this works only while shooting RAW(NEF)...
While I don't have a D7000 to my disposal I wonder if this results will keep the exceptional DR the D7000 has at its native iso 100 or if iso will go down just the way DR goes down while iso goes up with former generation cameras.
If DR remains the same, this would be a great reason to purchase a D7000... It would be like a new generation Fuji high dynamic range camera..
Another question I would like to get explained and documented with samples if possible is while using this underexposing/EV recovering-technique will give the same saturation, hue and tonality as a native higher iso image or will it need to be postprocessed more to get there?

Related to this topic Mr. Bob Newman published some interesting data about sensor quantum efficiency and read noise on sensorgen.info.

Your input and thoughts about this would be very appreciated. Thanks in advance.
kindest regards,

Stany
