It has bothered me for a long time.
The image coming from a lens is circular shaped. Why not design a sensor that makes as much use of this area as possible? A square sensor would meet these criteria in the best way.
The idea that people would not want a square image is nonsense; about 30 years ago the 126 film was extremely popular and that was 26x26mm. Let us not forget Hasselblad, Bronica and all other 6x6 cameras. I can hardly understand this "old fashioned" way of thinking.
Who knows why?
