Upresizing images, some thoughts and questions...

Post by Stany Buyle »

I wonder how many people needed to upresize images, why, how and what software tool you were using for that.

I did some upresizing myself with PS bicubic for tests on this website, and downloaded some trials of specific software,
Genuine Fractals from onOnesoftware and BlowUp from AlienSkin sofware.

Until now my impression about upresized images is that it isn't a valuable replacement for more native resolution like D3 compared to D3X... But opinions vary about this and depend on how you want to use upresized images, from cropping or for a bigger print.
Some comparison shots with explanations by an expert have been published on Steve Bingham's website.

Your input would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
kindest regards,

Stany

Hi Stany,

I uprez images sometimes for printing but whether or not I will uprez has a lot of factors, the biggest of which is the type of printing/printer that I am going to be using. (If they are being printed using a print service that uses larger format photo printers I tend not to as their print algorithms are as good as things like genuine fractals, I have tried this myself with 6MP output from the FUJI S5 at up to 20inch by 30 inch). However if I am printing using a good inkjet machine then I will uprez to a native resolution for the printer - using an Epson 7800 I get better results this way for most subjects.

I've found that for me genuine fractals is amazing for adding virtual detail on nature images, but is not so good on portraits (just my opinion!)

What I hadn't thought about that smacked me in the face a few weeks ago is how to downsize high resolution images to print well. 24mpix images printed at postcard size using in store print services really block up but I hadn't even thought of this until I went and did it a few weeks ago. This was never an issue with lower resolution images, but it just showed me that massive files aren't always great!
