Momoji (Japanese Maple)

Post by ChrisBergstrom »

I wanted to share these photos I took yesterday evening. I was using my D700 and new 85mm 1.8D lens. I hope you enjoy them... Thanks for looking and your comments are appreciated.

Chris

Thanks for posting.
The day was very windy and I was just trying the lens out really fast and saw the beautiful glow coming through the leaves and had to attempt to capture it. I got dogged big time for it on dprieview. lol I kind of expected that though. I was told I don't know what good bokeh should look like and how this lens is inferior to the 1.4 85mm, blah, blah, blah. Kind of annoying when you're excited people rain on your party. I never claimed it to be a masterpiece or anything, I just wanted to share how the lens "could" produce good bokeh in the right situation. Now I'm almost on a mission to take some good bokeh shots just to vindicate the lens in my own mind. Now they got me thinking that the lens must be inferior or something.

I knew when I was taking the photos that the conditions weren't ideal and even afterwards recognized that the background was way too noisy, but I live under a canopy of trees, so I couldn't just remove them from the shot or else I would have chosen a more plain and less busy background.

Anyway, thanks for looking and letting me vent a little about the comments I received elsewhere. I can take criticism, but I never implied that it was as good, better or even competing with the 1.4 and I DO know what pleasing bokeh should look like. When you have 1,000 shiny points of light OOF, it's not going to look good as was the case with the Japanese maple.

The text on the photo says my last name in Katakana and "Photo Studio(s)" in Kanji below it (last 3 characters). I'm thinking of keeping it for my watermark/copyright text. I like it at least! lol

Thanks, Chris

BTW I am a big fan of the 85mm 1.8 AF-D, this is one of my favorite lenses on FX, and I have no problem with the bokeh...
just an old example on the D200, many people are talking about the 1.4 but I never felt the urge to "upgrade" to the 1.4 (the AF one).

I have a copy of the old 1.4 AIS, and I also love that lens, but I don't use it a lot because it is MF of course.

Thanks Guy! I think the bokeh has an octagonal feel to it, which to what seem to be 1.4 "creamy" bokeh purists is not good enough! lol I like your photo you just posted and appreciate you trying to make me feel like the 1.8 isn't a substandard lens.
