Shooting with Nikon Z6
I was shooting with a Nikon Z6 combined with the 50mm F1.8 Z and 24-70 F4 S today. As I was testing the Z7 before there were no things to learn about body and handling.
I was shooting NEF + jpeg fine but I don't have the software yet to open my Z6 nef files ( I hope to get the new Capture NX-D version this week)... So underneath images are as they came from the XQD card + © in PS. NO POST PROCESSING.
I was taking about 700 pictures in Ghent (B), at home and ….
...No better opportunity to try Z6 at very high iso than my newborn grandson
( All pictures were intentionally taken at high to very high iso to test this camera.)
You can click on the image to open the original jpeg.
Leo with aunt Cindy...
In really lowlight conditions I like the results from Z6 until iso 25600 TMHO, iso 12800 is outstanding ). From iso 51200 upwards noise reduction takes away too much detail. Of course this might change once the updated Nikon software is available.

Z6' AF in very low light
As I ordered the Z6 specially for wedding and event photography, testing the Z6' AF ability in extremely lowlight is what I was (very) curious about.
This is what I saw in reality:
And this is what Z6 with 50mm F1.8 captures after locking AF very fast. (the green AF assist light helped of course, but anyhow...)
I included the exif in the picture.
The Z6 did not only nail focus, it also managed to deliver a correct WB and accurate colours.
Kudos to Nikon!
BTW and as I wrote already, even though I consider the FTZ adapter as an engineering masterpiece, the Z series cameras AF faster and lock faster AF with their native Z lenses, which seems logic to me...

Z6 for indoor lowlight action (12fps @ iso 6400)
Z6 impresses me a lot, more than Z7 did, especially for action.
A sample picture of indoor (relative lowlight) action photography @ 12 fps:
click on the image to open the picture in a bigger resolution
And a crop of the 3th frame of this session: there is motion blur because of the speed of the action (1/200 sec) while I did not want to go into higher iso than 6400 for this session

Z-series IBIS and Z6 high iso...
- Whatever Z6 or Z7, as for myself, the top characteristic of this new Nikon generation is IBIS.
- Related to Z6, the IQ in lowlight @ iso 12800 is simply amazing…
I had D3s & D4 for a long time, D5 for a short time, D750 and a couple more as a reference and I've never seen iso 12800 pictures that good as what I got SOOC with Z6, up to that with an amazing colour accuracy while shooting AWB even when taken in extremely low light..
Underneath image, just like the one here above during the same session with my model , were taken handheld. Handheld in a near to complete dark situation as shown here below:
The scene how I saw it with my eyes:
And the picture how Z6 handles this, with exif included. jpeg SOOC without any PP :
at a shutter speed of 1/2.5 sec (!!!) and iso 12800...
No sharpening or any kind of PP applied….
Z6 (with the green assist light) locked focus nearly instatly (no hunting) and you get this kind of detail: (100% crop resized to 1000px longest side)
Registered members of this forum can download the original NEF file for privat use or use on this forum through this link. (not for distribution on commercial websites.)
Last but not least, WB and colour accuracy in these circumstances and such high iso are near to perfect…
Z6' IQ in lowlight @ iso 12800 is simply amazing...
WOW !!!

Ghent with Nikon Z6 (5.11.2018)
Here below some pictures taken in Ghent on 5/11/2018, late afternoon.
While Nikon did not release an raw update for Z6 in NX software I had to start from jpegs what doesn't give me always the result I would like to get...
About Gent ("Ghent" in English): Used to spend a lot of time there when I was young(4 centuries ago ) Lovely city, great food in old styled restaurants, great university, and an incredible yearly festival "De Gentse feesten".

Interesting related topic by AA2...
AA2 is an "Authorised Anonymous" forum member who has some close contacts @ N.
That person had some info in the past at an earlier stage than professional Nikon users, reviewers or commercial websites: his announcement of the D500 when nobody on other fora knew about. He gave interesting insight in the D800 AF issue that was heavily blown out of proportion on different media and in April 2018 he announced the Z series... He also knew Z6 will come earlier than the initially release date by Nikon which was scheduled November 30...
Now he published a topic that I wasn't able to test yet because I don't have a Z7 anymore...
Make Z7' AF faster while lowering fps.. Correct info or not, I don't know yet... Interesting? Definitely!

About Z6' camera settings and originals of the posted pictur
Just a little word about settings, originals and sharpening of the pictures...
TMHO sharpening images in a camera review is cheating towards people who are interested.
The full size images look sharp even though they come SOOC with sharpening set to "0". As I mentioned before I cannot handle the NEFs yet.
Further more all images have been shot handheld and several @ very high iso.
The related picture here below for example has been shot handheld at 1/2.5 second (!!!) and iso 12800...
Related to the pictures of Ghent, here the crop area of picture 17 and the 100% crop next to it:
Very sharp images to my opinion...
Kindest regards,
Stany

Z6 vs D5, D750 & eos R on Dpreview test chart...
I saw my impressions about the Z6' exceptionnel iso 12800 performance been confirmed on the Dpreview comparison test chart.
I feel that, in the high iso department, Z6 is really more than just evolution from one to the next generation...

BIF with Z6 & nikon 200-500
2019 09 19 a new related topic: My Z6' & Z7' AF optimisation setup...
----
I was doing some BIF photography with my Z6 today and it's working extremely well. The high frame rate which enables more choice among keepers makes it more attractive than my D850. While D850 has a clear advantage in resolution, Z6 does much better at high iso.
Tracking was significantly better than I expected and MUCH better than what I experienced with Z7.
Underneath image is as it comes straight out of the camera. No additional post processing or sharpening.
The scene:

Z6' subject tracking was significantly better than I expected...
While locking to the subject is slower than D5, D850 or D500(but not at all bad), once Z6 has locked on the subject, it keeps up very well, even with disturbing and confusing backgrounds. I did the same testing with Z7, in even better light (August) but Z7 had a significantly lower keeper rate.

Z6'AF vs Z7'AF
On my questions about Z6'AF vs Z7'AF I got interesting answers from AA2...
AA2 wrote:"AA2: Make Z7' AF faster while lowering fps.."
Most reviewers and users report that Z7'AF is significantly slower than its DSLR counterpart D850 in continuous mode-H & and AF-C.
First of all, ML' AF and DSLR' AF is very different, with both systems having strengths and weaknesses.
Making Z7' AF in AF-C & CM faster can be achieved while lowering fps. There is a relation between Z7' AF speed in continuous mode and the buffer.
Also the difference in file size and related buffer might result in an advantage in AF speed in certain circumstances for Z6 vs Z7.
Next to a smaller buffer another reason for the difference between D850' and Z' AF is that D850 has 3 operating modules, while Zseries have one.
AA2 wrote:Z7 vs Z6 distinction in AF speed is identified with:
-buffer (CFExpress memory cards will enhance Z7)
-similar processing unit handling data from 493 vs 273 FP
-Z7 Detection range: -1 to +19 EV vs Z6 Detection range -2 to +19 EV
