A sample situation why I moved from Nikon Z to Canon EOS R5...

Post by Stany Buyle »

Hello everybody!

Underneath a sample situation why I moved from Nikon Z to EOS R5... Even though I considered the Nikon Z'AF as very good in normal circumstances, in some occasions the Z' AF was frustrating compared to my beloved D500...

related topic  Swallow in flight with EOS R5 & 100-400 vII

After 2 years of unsuccessful attempts with my Z7 & Z6 to capture this kind of kingfisher' action with my Nikon Z6 & Z7, -even when combined with the outstanding 500 mm F5.6 PF prime-, yesterday I went for a first kingfisher encounter with my EOS R5.
Because I wanted maximum tele for my first kingfisher session of this season, I used my RF 800 F11.
Initially, I did not have any plans to capture action... I my mind there is still a bit of the idea that an F11 lens doesn't work for this kind of photography...

Far beyond my expectations, and where my Nikon Z7 & Z6 NEVER even came close to succeed, my EOS R5 even did better/faster than my former D4, D850 & D500 DSLRs did.
As a matter of fact, I don't know of any professional DSLR that can focus quickly with an F11 800mm lens ...

After long time of waiting, kingfisher arrived... Time as you see in the exif is 12:02:59

OMG, he's gone...Time as you see in the exif is 12:03:02

What's this? Time as you see in the exif is 12:03:03

Information about the images and shooting circumstances: Taken handheld. Image published as it came straight out of the camera (SOOC).No sharpening, no PP with exception of ©. In camera setting: Fine detail, WB:auto. Converted from RAW in DPPP 4.14.00.0

and a 100% crop of the above:

Shooting distance from camera to the kingfisher was 15,2 meters. Image

To me, the Canon EOS R5 has the AF of the D5 & D500 combined with the IQ of a D850, and all this at more than double speed and, last but not least, with perfect AF compatibility for F11 lenses...

I bought my EOS R5 @ Audiophil in Aachen-Germany.

Thanks for looking,

Goedenavond Stany,

Bedankt !
In jouw vorige email schreef je: To me, the Canon EOS R5 has the AF of the D5 & D500 combined with the IQ of a D850.

Met “…With the Image Quality of a D850” bedoel ik
• gelijke sensor resolutie (45Mp),
• vergelijkbare ruis…

Vriendelijke groet,
Stany

3 from today, same gear, same software for conversion from raw, etc., but these ones are heavily cropped...
NO noise reduction applied.

Hi Stany,

I really enjoyed your wonderful pictures !

The low noise in the cropped images is surprising to me. Is there no noise reduction in the RAW to JPG conversion?

Best regards,
Carlos

Good morning Carlos!
Thanks for your kind reaction.
All posted images are as they came after conversion from RAW to JPEG in reduced size with Canon DPP 4 software from my CF express card. (For myself, I keep always a full-sized TIFF copy of the images I like the best.)
No noise reduction, no sharpening, no PP... Sometimes some shadow lifting as the only manipulation.
The very underestimated advantage of brand software ( Canon with DPP4 as well as Nikon with NX studio, -and Capture NX-D before that ) is that all in-camera settings are retained while doing the conversion.
When ready I use PS5 to put "©Stany Buyle", nothing more.
Unfortunately, when I compare the original jpeg & the PS jpeg as a pixel peeper, I clearly notice quality reduction already.
Kindest regards,
Stany

Every time again my R5, even coupled with the F11 800mm, is ready to capture totally unexpected situations, like my beloved nikon D500 did. This in big contrast was my nightmare with Nikon Z6 & Z7.
I missed soooo many shots like these because of the poor Z6 & Z7 AF performance with unexpected action. One time a big predator bird was sitting extremely well visible, -like posing- in front of me at somewhere between 8 and 15 meters while I was trying to get the bird in focus. It just could not focus...   That was the first time I was considering changing brand.
