Canon RF 50mm F1.8 user review...

Post by Stany Buyle »

My RF50mm F1.8 arrived... :D

Last Friday I ordered an RF 50mm F1.8 lens for occasional portraiture or snapshot in low light with my R7 as a compact, lightweight setup. The R7' crop factor turns it into an 80mm F1.8 which should be perfect for portraiture...
Of course, I ordered this lens @ Audiophil photo in Aachen- Germany, -just like all my other photo gear-, because of their extraordinary service, good prices and huge stock.
It arrived @ my home the day before yesterday by UPS.

Audiophil is a "real" shop that you can visit or contact by phone while being answered directly by a friendly human being rather the classic huge-company-shit "press 1 if you want to spend a lot of money", or "press 2 if you want to annoy us for information..." :D  ...

Canon RF 50mm F1.8 user review step 1: AF check.

Post by Stany Buyle »

After unpacking, step 1: AF check while shooting handheld.

This kind of testing, -with at least 10 test pictures-, gives me an idea about AF accuracy and speed, part one of my first impressions...

In all 10 test shots the AF accuracy seems perfect to me...
AF is acceptable fast as well, not at all the AF speed like a pro lens, but OK.
The AF motor makes quite a bit of noise while focusing, but as I don't do video, that's not a concern for me...

Canon RF 50mm F1.8 user review. Step 2: sharpness while used on EOS R7

Post by Stany Buyle »

Step 2: sharpness @ F1.8 & while used on EOS R7

Two sample pictures taken handheld in low light. The first one at iso 6400, 1/125 sec and F1.8. Converted from raw to jpeg in Canon DPP. No further sharpening or post-processing.
R7 seems to perform extremely well @ high iso...

and one @ iso 2500, F1.8 and 1/40 sec, while shooting handheld.

Step 2: sharpness & while used on EOS R7

A picture in good light @ iso 200, F1.8, 1/1250 sec, picture taken handheld.
Eye detection was OFF

And a 100% crop:

So my conclusion about sharpness (especially because I did this testing at F1.8) and while being used on EOS R7: WOW...
