My sigma 50-500 OS arrived...

Post by RudyDusslier »

First impressions:

I had the old version of this lens on my D2X and I liked it about sharpness but it was mainly a lens to use on tripod...
The main difference is the vibration reduction which enables now to take pictures handhold at 500mm focal and 1/100 sec or even slower.
The enormous evolution in useable iso since D2X to nowadays -especially with the D3s- in combination with the new 50-500'OS will be very interesting I guess. The necessity of F4 or faster teles becomes less and less important while iso 1600 with my D3s looks way better than iso 400 did with my D2x...

The AF works very fast and the OS has two settings. Will find out more about this tomorrow...

I'll post some sample pictures here in the coming days...

Regards,
Rudy.

Some first pictures...

Underneath pictures have been taken with my D3x. This lens is the finest super zoom I've used until today. Fast focusing, very sharp over the whole focal range.

The nucleair central in Doel.

Bird shot @ 500mm

Post by Vincent De Vos »

Goodafternoon Rudy,

Can you please post a crop of the bird picture @ 500mm? Very curious...
Thanks.

Passioned by beautiful pictures, not a very active photographer though...
Regards,
Vincent

PS I use google translate a lot to write better English. So, if mistake, I's google, not me. ;)

Hi Vincent,
The picture I posted was cropped already.
Underneath a resized file with the proportions of the original file:

This file was shot in NEF, neutral in camera setting as I always do.

And after cropping and PP:

it would be interesting to see 100% crops (1 image pixel = 1 pixel over here) or a link to a full resolution picture of test pictures shot fully open. This would be a better way to judge the lens, because even the worst lenses will perform pretty well between f8-f10.
